There are many cold working tools available to the glass artist to clean and polish a piece to achieve an appealing finished product. The sandblaster is useful for etching or cleaning the surface of a glass piece that may have come out of the kiln with devitrification (looks like soap scum on the piece).

There are many grinding tools for cleaning and creating a smooth or beveled edge. Generally a piece is started out with a rough sanding such as 80 grit and the piece will progress through several levels until a finish of 400-600 is reached. The piece can also go back into the kiln for a fire-polish finish.
