Fused glass is usually layered with two layers of 3mm glass because glass wants to level off about 1/4 inch thick. The first fuse in this picture will be a full fuse to a temperature of 1465 degrees.

The second fusing is a contour fuse to about 1370 degrees. This will allow the small pieces on top to retain some of their texture rather than being flat.

The third firing is a slump to a temperature of about 1200 degrees. Molds are made out of ceramics or stainless steel.

The final product when the kiln is opened is always a surprise - sometimes a delight and sometimes a heartbreak, but always exciting and a learning event.

I am inspired by many beautiful and unique elements of nature. One such element that particularly stands out is the Amanita musaria toadstool. Though poisonous, this mushroom serves as an inspiration, as it is equal parts bold and beautiful. I believe art should inspire you to find beauty in the unexpected.
